The Dog Who Knew Too Much

The black Lab sat by the pool, watching me with those knowing eyes that made me question everything I'd done to get here. I adjusted my sunglasses, trying to look like just another attendee at the corporate retreat, but the dog's gaze followed my every move. It was almost as if he knew I was a spy, hired to gather intelligence on the company's upcoming product launch.

The water in the pool shimmered under the desert sun, casting fractured reflections of the executives mingling nearby. I'd spent six months building this cover, slowly gaining access to their inner circle, learning their coffee orders and their insecurities. But standing there, nursing my third gin and tonic, I felt the weight of it all pressing down on my chest.

"You're not listening to a word I'm saying, are you?" Mark from accounting appeared beside me, too drunk to notice my distraction. "I'm telling you, this merger's going to be huge. We're talking serious money."

I nodded absently, my mind racing with the consequences of what I'd already transmitted back to my handlers. The dog whined softly, as if echoing my own doubts.

"Bullshit," I said, louder than intended. Mark blinked, surprised.

"What?"

"This whole thing. The merger, the celebration, the fake optimism." I gestured toward the pool where the CEO's wife was laughing too loudly with the VP of sales. "It's all theater."

The dog stood, stretched, and walked over to press his wet nose against my hand. In that moment, something broke inside me. I couldn't do it anymore. The lies, the deception, the constant monitoring of my own expressions.

"Excuse me," I said to Mark, pulling my phone from my pocket. I typed out a message to my contact: 'I'm done. Find someone else.'

As I pressed send, the Lab let out a satisfied bark and settled back beside my chair, finally content to let me sit in the sun and pretend, just for a little while longer, that I belonged.
