The Dog Who Knew Too Much

frienddoghairspygoldfish

Buster was no ordinary dog. He was a spy—or at least, he liked to think so. Every day, he'd sneak through the house with his nose to the ground, his golden fur brushing against doorframes as he investigated important matters: Where had the cat hidden her toy? What was making that strange noise in the attic? Who kept stealing socks from the laundry?

His best friend, Lily, knew all about Buster's secret missions. She was the only one who understood him. Lily had the most beautiful curly red hair that bounced when she laughed, which she did often, especially when Buster tried to look serious with his spy face.

"Buster," Lily would giggle, "you're the silliest spy in the world."

But Buster took his job very seriously.

One rainy afternoon, Buster discovered something suspicious. The family goldfish, a tiny orange fish named Fin, was not swimming in circles like usual. Fin was staring at Buster with enormous eyes, moving in strange patterns.

*Left, right, left, left, right.*

Buster's ears perked up. This was a code! He'd seen secret codes in movies Lily watched. Fin was trying to tell him something!

For three days, Buster watched Fin's movements. Left meant danger. Right meant safe. Left-left-right meant... follow the cat?

On the fourth day, Buster realized the message: *Someone needs help.*

He barked at Lily until she followed him to the back door. There, in the garden, they found their neighbor's lost kitten, stuck in a bush and mewing sadly.

"Buster, you saved her!" Lily cried, hugging his neck. "But how did you know?"

Buster wagged his tail and glanced back at the fishbowl. Fin swam happily in a circle.

That night, Lily whispered to Buster, "Maybe you really are a spy after all. And Fin is your secret helper."

Buster closed his eyes, dreaming of adventures. Being a spy was wonderful—but having friends who believed in you was even better.
