The Dog Who Knew Secrets
Buster wasn't just a dog. He was a secret spy dog. At least, that's what seven-year-old Lily told everyone.
Every day after school, Lily and Buster would rush to the park. Their mission? Watch the mysterious new boy who played padel alone against the wall. Thwack, thwack, thwack went the ball.
"He's planning something," Lily whispered, hiding behind a bench. "Buster, sniff for clues!"
Buster's tail wagged. He was excellent at finding clues. Mostly tennis balls and sandwich wrappers.
Then came the day they saw something impossible. The new boy stumbled toward them, arms straight, face pale. He walked like a... zombie!
"A real zombie!" Lily gasped. But instead of running away, she remembered her spy training: always investigate.
"Are you okay?" she called out.
The zombie boy looked confused. Then he fainted right onto the grass. Lily rushed over. His forehead felt hot.
"I'm Miguel," he mumbled. "I haven't eaten all day."
Lily shared her granola bar. Buster licked Miguel's hand. Miguel sat up and smiled. "I'm new here. I just wanted to practice padel, but I got so hungry I almost fainted."
"You looked like a zombie!" Lily laughed.
"Do you want to learn padel?" Miguel asked. "I can teach you!"
Soon Lily, Miguel, and Buster were at the padel court every afternoon. Buster would chase balls between the fence. Lily wasn't just a pretend spy anymore — she was a real friend.
And the moral? Sometimes things that seem scary or strange are just people who need a friend. Plus, every good spy knows: always carry snacks!
Buster agreed. He was a very good dog.
