The Dog Who Knew Secrets

Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon, he'd grab his glove and run to the park, dreaming of hitting the perfect home run. But there was one problem — Leo always struck out.

One day, his golden retriever Baxter started acting strange. Baxter would sneak behind the old fence at the edge of the field and peek through the cracks, like a little spy on a secret mission.

"What are you looking at, buddy?" Leo asked, kneeling beside his dog.

Baxter barked softly and pawed at the fence. Curious, Leo lifted himself up to peek through. There, in the neighboring pasture, stood the biggest bull Leo had ever seen. His name was Barnaby, and all the kids said he was the grumpiest bull in town.

But Barnaby wasn't being grumpy. He was sitting alone, watching Leo play baseball through the fence. His big brown eyes looked sad.

"He wants to play," Leo whispered in wonder.

The next day, Leo brought his oldest, softest baseball. He stood near the fence and tossed it gently. Barnaby's ears perked up. Slowly, the magnificent bull walked over and nudged the ball with his nose.

Baxter wagged his tail wildly — like he knew this would happen all along!

Every afternoon after that, Leo, Baxter, and Barnaby played together. Leo learned that Barnaby wasn't grumpy at all. He was just lonely. And when Leo finally hit his first home run, Barnaby let out a happy moo that echoed across the whole town.

Leo realized something wonderful that summer: sometimes the best friends are the ones you have to be brave enough to say hello to — even if they're big, or different, or live on the other side of the fence.

And Baxter? He just smiled his doggy smile, happy to have been the spy who brought three friends together.
