The Dog Who Knew
Maya's hair had declared war on her. Spring humidity turned her normally smooth waves into a frizzy halo that made her want to hide in the bathroom stall until graduation. But tonight was Jordan's party—the social event of the season—and she couldn't bail.
Her older brother Kai caught her staring in the mirror, mid-panic attack. "You look fine, Maya. Stop stress spiraling."
"Easy for you to say," she muttered, applying yet more product. "Your hair actually cooperates."
Kai laughed. "Remember when I tried to straighten it for picture day in eighth grade? Looked like I stuck my finger in an electrical socket."
Maya cracked a smile. "Fair."
Outside, she navigated the shortcut through the Hendersons' property. Their bulldog, Tank—basically a muscular loaf with anger issues—usually slept this time of night. But tonight, Tank was awake, and he was NOT having it.
Maya froze. She'd been terrified of dogs since one chased her up a slide in third grade. Tank's jowls swung like pendulums as he lumbered toward her, snorting.
"Hey buddy," she whispered, heart hammering. "Nice doggo..."
Tank stopped three feet away and sat. His grumpy face softened into something unexpectedly... sympathetic? He let out this long, dramatic sigh and rested his chin on his massive paws.
Maya inched closer. Tentatively reached out her hand.
Tank leaned into her touch. His bulldog rolls were surprisingly soft. His odd underbite gave him a permanent half-grin.
"You're not so scary, huh?" she scratched behind his ears. "Just misunderstood."
Something in her chest loosened. This creature she'd built up in her head as a monster was just... Tank. A goofy, slobbering, oddly sweet bully of a dog.
At Jordan's party, someone commented on her hair. "The humidity, right?" they said.
Old Maya would've spiraled. Tonight, Maya thought of Tank—how ridiculous it was to fear something just because it seemed intimidating at first glance.
"Yeah," she said, flipping her frizz like it was intentional. "Gotta work with what you've got."
Later, Tank the bulldog followed her home from a respectful distance. Her new familiar.
