The Dog Who Guarded Magic

Lily's golden retriever, Barnaby, was no ordinary dog. Every full moon, he would scratch at the garden gate, whining with a secret he couldn't speak. One starry night, Lily followed him through the bushes and discovered something magical.

Behind the old oak tree, a sparkling blue pool glowed like captured moonlight. But what amazed Lily most was what sat beside it—a tiny sphinx, no bigger than a kitten, with wings like polished copper and eyes that sparkled like tiny stars.

"Welcome, child," the sphinx purred. "Barnaby has brought you to the Pool of Wishes, where true hearts may ask one question. But first, you must solve my riddle."

Lily's heart pounded. The sphinx continued, "I have four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening. What am I?"

Lily thought hard. She remembered her favorite book about ancient stories. "A person!" she exclaimed. "A baby crawls on four legs, grown-ups walk on two, and old people use canes for three!"

The sphinx smiled, and the pool's light grew brighter. "Correct! Your wish is granted."

"I wish," Lily said, hugging Barnaby, "that every child could have a friend as loyal and wonderful as my dog."

The sphinx nodded approvingly. "A selfless wish from a pure heart. It shall be so." She sprinkled glowing dust into the pool, and ripples of magic spread across the water's surface.

From that night on, Barnaby would often lead lonely children to the magical pool, where they would find their own perfect companions. And Lily learned that the greatest magic of all was the power of kindness and friendship.

Every full moon, she and Barnaby still visit the sphinx by the glowing pool, always bringing treats for their tiny, riddle-loving friend—and always remembering that the best wishes are the ones we make for others.
