The Dog Who Guarded Magic

Lily loved to be a spy. Every Saturday, she crept through her backyard with her trusty notebook, searching for secrets. She spied on ants marching in rows, on squirrels hiding acorns, and on the mysterious old house next door that everyone said was empty.

One hot afternoon, while spying through the fence, she spotted something extraordinary—a golden dog with eyes like sparkling stars, padding softly around a swimming pool that shimmered with colors no ordinary water had ever shown. The pool rippled with rainbows, and when the wind blew, the water hummed a soft melody.

Lily climbed over the fence, her heart pounding with adventure. The dog looked at her and—impossibly—spoke.

'Hello, young spy,' said the dog. 'I've been waiting for someone curious enough to find us.'

Lily gasped. 'You can talk!'

'My name is Orion,' said the dog. 'And this is the Pool of Dreams. Every night, it collects wishes from sleeping children. I guard them until they're ready to come true.' He nodded toward the glowing water. 'Look inside.'

Lily peered into the pool and gasped again. Floating there among the magical water were hundreds of glowing wishes—a red bicycle, a trip to the moon, a kitten, a dad coming home from the army, a grandma feeling better.

Suddenly, something splashed into the pool. Lily looked down to see an iPhone sinking into the magical water, dropped by accident from someone's pocket above.

'No!' cried Lily. 'Technology can't be good for magic!'

But Orion smiled. 'Watch.'

The iPhone didn't break. Instead, it began to glow, and suddenly, a holographic image floated above it—a real, live girl who looked lonely, sitting on a roof somewhere, writing in a journal.

'That's Maya,' whispered Orion. 'She wished for a friend. Your iPhone connected her wish to the Pool of Dreams.' He looked at Lily with his starry eyes. 'Sometimes, the most magical things happen when old magic and new discoveries work together.'

Lily's own wish appeared in the water then—to find something truly magical.

'Your wish already came true,' said Orion gently. 'You found magic, and you found a friend too.' He nudged her hand. 'Maya lives just beyond that wall. She's been wishing for someone who believes in magic too.'

That afternoon, Lily climbed over the wall with Orion's blessing, carrying Maya's phone. Maya became her first real friend. And every Saturday after that, they visited the Pool of Dreams together, two young spies of magic, with Orion the golden dog always waiting to show them that wishes—like friendship—can come true in the most unexpected ways.

The world is full of magic, you see, if you're curious enough to look for it.
