The Dog Who Dreamed of Underwater Tea Parties

Barnaby was not an ordinary dog. While other dogs chased balls and barked at mail carriers, Barnaby spent his days pressing his nose against the glass of Mrs. Higgins' fish tank. Inside, three golden fish swam in shimmering circles — Goldie, Sparkle, and Finnigan.

Every afternoon, the goldfish would notice Barnaby's wet nose prints on their glass world. They swam closer, waving their fins in what looked like underwater hellos. Barnaby's tail thumped happily against the floor.

One rainy Tuesday, Barnaby discovered something magical behind the old oak tree in Mrs. Higgins' garden — a tiny bottle labeled MOON VITAMINS. A colorful note attached read: For those who dream of impossible things.

Barnaby swallowed one glowing blue vitamin. Suddenly, he could breathe underwater!

The goldfish squealed with delight when Barnaby joined them in their tank. They showed him their treasure chest of shiny pebbles and introduced him to Timothy the Turtle. They had a marvelous underwater tea party with tiny bubble-cakes and seaweed sandwiches.

But when Barnaby tried to play fetch with Finnigan, the little fish looked worried. Barnaby's paws were too big. His fur made the water cloudy. He couldn't dart and dance like his new friends.

Mrs. Higgins found Barnaby in the garden later that evening, looking sad.

"Sometimes," she said gently, "the best vitamin is just being yourself."

Barnaby realized she was right. He didn't need to be a fish to have wonderful friends. The next day, he brought his favorite squeaky toy to the tank and played a new game — the goldfish would swim to one side, and Barnaby would run to the other, racing each other through their separate worlds.

And every afternoon, they'd press their noses (and fins) against the glass, happy just to be together — exactly as they were.
