The Dog Who Dreamed of Stars
Barnaby was a small brown dog with floppy ears and a very big dream. While other dogs chased cats and chewed bones, Barnaby chased something much more exciting — shooting stars.
Every night, he would sit on his favorite hill, watching the sky sparkle and twinkle. "One day," he would whisper, "I'll catch a star and make a wish."
One magical evening, a bright star shot across the sky and landed right in Farmer McGregor's field! Barnaby's tail wagged so hard it almost knocked him over. But between him and the fallen star stood a very grumpy bull named Barnaby.
The bull was huge and black, with horns like crescent moons. Most animals were terrified of him. But this Barnaby — the dog, not the bull — was brave.
"Excuse me, Mr. Bull," said the little dog politely. "I need to pass. A star fell in your field, and I must find it."
The bull snorted. "Why should I let you pass? No one ever visits me. They only run away."
Barnaby thought for a moment. Then he did something unexpected. He reached into his fur and pulled out his most treasured possession — a small, worn baseball he'd found near the old schoolhouse.
"Would you like to play?" Barnaby asked gently.
The bull's eyes widened. No one had ever asked him to play before.
"What's baseball?" the bull asked.
"It's the most fun game ever!" Barnaby explained. "I'll roll the ball, and you try to hit it with your nose. Then I'll chase it and bring it back. We'll take turns."
For the first time in his life, the bull smiled.
They played until the moon rose high above the field. The bull would push the baseball with his mighty nose, and Barnaby would scramble after it, barking with joy. They laughed until their sides hurt.
When they finally stopped, the bull pawed at something glowing in the grass.
"Is this what you were looking for?" he asked.
It was the fallen star — still warm and shimmering with magic. Barnaby nudged it toward the bull.
"You found it! You make the wish."
The bull thought carefully. "I wish... for a friend who will come back tomorrow."
Barnaby's tail thumped happily. "That's the easiest wish ever."
And from that night on, the dog and the bull were best friends. And sometimes, if you look closely at the stars on a clear night, you might still see them playing together, a baseball rolling across the heavens, followed by the laughter of two friends who found each other by wishing on a star.
