The Dog Who Dreamed in Orange
Barnaby was no ordinary dog. He was a golden retriever with a very special secret — every time he closed his eyes, he dreamed in brilliant shades of orange.
One sunny afternoon, Barnaby trotted through the garden behind his little house. His owner, a kind girl named Lily, was planting something new in the vegetable patch. Barnaby's nose twitched. What was that delicious smell?
He bounded over to find Lily planting bright green leaves. "This is spinach, Barnaby!" she said, scratching him behind the ears. "It's super healthy and makes you strong. Want to try a leaf?"
Barnaby sniffed the spinach politely but wasn't convinced. He much preferred the treats he dreamed about — giant orange cookies that floated like clouds through orange skies.
That night, Barnaby curled up on his soft bed and closed his eyes. *POOF!* Suddenly he was in his magical orange world again. But this time, something was different. A tiny fairy with wings like an orange butterfly fluttered toward him.
"Barnaby!" she squeaked. "We need your help! The Orange King is sad because nobody wants to visit his kingdom. Everyone thinks it's too weird to be completely orange!"
Barnaby tilted his head. He didn't think orange was weird at all. In fact, he loved orange!
The fairy led him to a magnificent palace where everything — the walls, the furniture, even the fountains — was a beautiful shade of orange. But the throne room was empty except for one lonely figure.
The Orange King sat with his head in his hands. "Nobody wants to come to my kingdom," he sighed. "They say it's too strange."
Barnaby padded up to the King and gently rested his chin on the royal knee. The King looked up, surprised. Then, slowly, a smile spread across his face. He reached out his palm and let Barnaby sniff it.
"You're not afraid of my orange kingdom?" the King asked wonderingly.
Barnaby wagged his tail so hard his whole body wiggled. Of course not! Orange was the color of warmth, of sunshine, of happy dreams!
The Orange King laughed — a sound like tinkling bells. "You know what? You're right! My kingdom IS special!" He stood up tall. "Will you be my royal guard and friend, brave dog?"
Barnaby barked happily.
From that day on, Barnaby visited the Orange King every night in his dreams. And when he woke up each morning, Lily always noticed how happy he seemed. She started giving him little pieces of spinach with his breakfast, and you know what? Barnaby decided spinach wasn't so bad after all — especially if it gave him energy for more orange adventures!
The moral: Sometimes the things that seem different or strange are actually the most wonderful — if you're brave enough to give them a chance.
