The Dog Who Danced on Water
Barnaby was a small golden dog with very big dreams. Every morning, he would go running through the tall grass behind his farmhouse, his golden fur shining like sunshine. He loved the feeling of wind in his ears and the smell of wildflowers as he raced across the meadow. But Barnaby had one big problem – he was afraid of water.
One hot summer day, Barnaby's best friend Luna, a silver kitten with bright green eyes, chased a butterfly right to the edge of Willow Creek. The creek was usually calm, but recent rains had made it deep and swift. Luna slipped on a mossy rock and tumbled into the rushing water with a splash!
'Luna!' Barnaby cried, his heart pounding. The water was pulling her away from the shore. Luna couldn't swim well, and she looked very scared. Barnaby wanted to help, but he stood frozen at the water's edge. He had never even put a paw in a puddle before.
'I have to save her!' Barnaby thought desperately. He closed his eyes tight and remembered something his grandmother had told him: 'True bravery isn't about not being scared. It's about doing what needs to be done, even when you ARE scared.'
Taking a deep breath, Barnaby leaped toward the water – and something amazing happened. Instead of sinking, his paws touched the surface and he kept running! He was actually running ON the water, as if it were solid ground. His paws made little ripples that glowed with golden light, and he moved faster than he ever had before.
Luna's eyes grew wide as she saw her friend coming toward her, golden trails of light streaming from his paws. Barnaby reached her, gently grabbed her by the scruff, and ran back to shore, the water still firm beneath his feet.
Safe on dry land, Luna curled up close to Barnaby. 'How did you do that?' she whispered in wonder.
Barnaby looked at his paws, now wet and normal-looking. 'I think,' he said thoughtfully, 'that sometimes love gives us magic powers we never knew we had.'
From that day on, Barnaby was never afraid of water again. He and Luna spent their summers playing by Willow Creek, and though Barnaby never again ran on water, he didn't need to. He had discovered something even better – that the bravest thing you can do is face your fears for someone you love.
