The Dog Who Could Taste Rainbows

Lily's dog Barnaby was no ordinary golden retriever. Every morning at breakfast, he'd do something silly. When Lily ate **spinach** from her garden, Barnaby would sneeze glitter. When she peeled an **orange**, he'd bark little bubbles that floated like tiny soap bubbles.

One hot afternoon, Lily and Barnaby went searching for the legendary Rainbow Pond. Her grandmother had told her stories—stories about a magical pool where the water tasted like your favorite dreams.

"Come on, Barnaby!" Lily called, splashing through shallow puddles as summer **water** dripped from the leaves above. Barnaby's ears perked up. He could smell magic.

They hiked past meadows filled with flowers that hummed soft tunes and trees that whispered hello. Barnaby chased butterflies the color of sunset. His tail wagged so hard it looked like a golden metronome keeping time with an invisible song.

Suddenly, they found it. The Rainbow Pond shimmered with every color imaginable. But something was wrong. The colors were fading, turning gray like old photographs.

An old turtle slowly poked her head from the water. "The pond is lonely," she said. "It needs joy to stay bright."

Lily's backpack held the treat she'd packed for lunch—a sweet **papaya** she'd picked that morning. She looked at the fading pond, then at Barnaby, then at the papaya.

"Barnaby, we need to share!"

Lily tore pieces of the golden papaya and tossed them gently into the water. Barnaby, understanding completely, did his happy dance—spinning in circles, barking with pure joy. As the papaya touched the water, ripples of golden light spread outward. Where Barnaby's paws touched the ground, flowers bloomed instantly.

The pond drank up their happiness. Colors exploded back to life—swirling reds, blues, greens, and purples so bright they made Lily gasp. The **water** sparkled like someone had sprinkled diamond dust across its surface.

"Thank you," the turtle said. "You've taught us something important. Magic isn't something you find. It's something you give away."

That night, Lily understood why Barnaby was magical. He'd known all along that the real treasure wasn't the Rainbow Pond at all. It was the joy of sharing something wonderful with someone you love.

And from that day on, whenever Lily ate spinach or peeled oranges, Barnaby didn't just sneeze glitter or bark bubbles. He smiled—a real, doggy smile—because he knew the secret of magic, too.
