The Dog Who Could Talk to Fish

Lily's golden retriever, Buster, had a secret. Every night at midnight, he would tiptoe to the fish bowl in the corner of Lily's room and whisper to Goldie, her orange goldfish.

One Tuesday, Lily woke up to strange giggling. She peeked through her eyelashes and couldn't believe her eyes—Buster was standing on his hind legs, having a conversation with Goldie!

"Buster?" Lily whispered, rubbing her eyes.

The dog froze. Goldie did a flip and disappeared behind her plastic castle.

"You can talk!" Lily sat up, her heart racing with excitement.

Buster sighed. "I promised I wouldn't tell humans. But Goldie says you're different. She says you have the kindest heart she's ever seen."

Lily's iPhone buzzed on her nightstand. It was a message from her friend Jake: "There's a sad bull at the farm next door. He has no friends."

"A bull?" Goldie bubbled to the surface. "Barnaby? I know him! He's the gentlest bull in the world, but everyone's scared of his size."

"We have to help him!" Lily declared.

The next morning, Lily and Buster snuck out to the neighboring farm. Barnaby the bull was enormous, with golden horns and the softest brown eyes. He was crying.

"Nobody wants to play with me," Barnaby sniffled. "They all run away."

"That's because they don't know you like we do," said Goldie, who was swimming in a portable bowl Lily had brought along. "You're the bull who saved a baby bird from falling out of its nest last spring. You're the bull who lets butterflies rest on your nose."

Barnaby's eyes widened. "You... you know about that?"

"Goldie knows everything," Buster said proudly. "She's the wisest fish in the world. She can see into hearts."

Lily pulled out her iPhone and snapped a picture of Barnaby gently nuzzling a butterfly that had landed on his nose. "See? This is who you really are."

Jake came running over the hill. His eyes went wide. "Is that... Barnaby? The bull everyone says is scary?"

"He's not scary," Lily said. "He's kind. And he needs friends."

Jake stepped closer. Barnaby held still, afraid to scare him away. But Jake reached out and scratched the bull behind his ear. Barnaby let out a happy snort.

"He likes it!" Jake laughed.

Soon, all the children from nearby farms came to meet Barnaby. They brought apples and carrots, and Barnaby became the most popular bull in the county.

That night, as Buster and Goldie whispered by moonlight, Lily smiled in her sleep. She had learned something wonderful: true friends see with their hearts, not their eyes. And sometimes, the best friendships come from the most unexpected places—a dog, a bull, a goldfish, and a girl with an iPhone, all working together to spread kindness.
