The Dog Who Could Read Palms
Lily had the most extraordinary dog in the world. His name was Barnaby, a golden retriever with fur that sparkled like sunlight, but he had a secret—he could read palms.
Every afternoon, Barnaby would gently take Lily's small palm in his paw and study the lines with his warm brown eyes. "You're going on an adventure today," he'd say, and somehow, he was always right.
One evening, as the stars began to twinkle above their garden, Barnaby pressed his nose against Lily's palm and whined softly. "Not an adventure today, Lily. A MISSION."
Lily's heart leaped. "What kind of mission?"
"The Big Dipper is lonely," Barnaby explained. "His friend, the Great Bull constellation, has fallen from the sky. We must find him before dawn, or he'll fade away forever."
Lily grabbed her spyglass from her toy box. She and Barnaby played spy every weekend, practicing how to sneak and search. But this time, it was real.
They crept through the garden, past the tall palm tree that swished in the night breeze. Barnaby's nose twitched. "I smell something green and magical..."
It was spinach! But not ordinary spinach—these leaves glowed with soft starlight. "Moon-garden spinach," Barnaby whispered. "Eat it, and you'll see the world as magical creatures do."
Lily took a small bite. Suddenly, the garden transformed! Fireflies danced like tiny stars, and there, sleeping among the flowers, was the Great Bull—no bigger than a calf, with constellation marks shimmering on his golden-brown fur.
The bull opened his eyes, sad and gentle. "I fell while playing tag with a comet. Can you help me home?"
Lily knew what to do. She fed the bull some glowing spinach too, then pointed toward the palm tree's highest branch. "We'll make a ladder!"
Working together, they climbed up, up, up until they could reach the stars. The bull leaped gracefully back into the sky, his constellation friends twinkling with joy.
"Thank you," he called down. "You're the best friends a star could have."
As the first sunbeam warmed the garden, Barnaby took Lily's palm once more. "See?" he said, pointing to a new line that glowed like stardust. "Now your palm tells everyone—you're a hero of the sky."
And from that night on, whenever Lily looked up at the Great Bull, he always seemed to wink back, reminding her that even small people and their magical dogs can do big, wonderful things.
