The Dog Who Could Fly

Luna loved her golden retriever, Barnaby. He wasn't just a dog—he was her best friend. Every afternoon after school, they'd explore the woods behind their house, looking for magic.

One Tuesday, Luna's grandmother planted something new in her garden. "These are special spinach seeds," Grandma said with a twinkle in her eye. "They grow wonder-leaves."

Luna didn't like spinach. But Barnaby sniffed the garden with great interest. That night, Luna woke to strange noises. She peeked out her window and gasped.

Barnaby was munching on the spinach plants. And as he ate, he began to glow. Slowly, beautifully, his paws lifted off the ground. He was floating!

"Barnaby!" Luna whispered, rushing outside in her pajamas. "What's happening?"

Barnaby wagged his tail happily and nudged her hand. Suddenly, Luna felt lighter too. Her feet left the grass, and together they floated upward toward the stars.

But then they heard a groan from the old oak tree. A zombie stumbled out!

Luna wanted to scream, but the zombie looked different. He was made of moss and leaves, with glowing amber eyes. He moved slowly, sadly.

"Don't be afraid," Barnaby seemed to say, even though dogs can't talk. Luna understood anyway.

The moss zombie spoke in a voice like rustling leaves. "I am the Guardian of the Garden. I've been sleeping for a hundred years. The spinach magic woke me."

He explained that he had protected magical gardens long ago, but had grown so lonely that he'd fallen into a deep sleep. Now that he was awake, he needed friends.

"Will you run with me?" the Guardian asked. "I've forgotten how to run properly. I'm so stiff from sleeping."

Luna and Barnaby landed gently. The three of them began running through the meadow, the Guardian's mossy feet leaving tiny flowers wherever he stepped. At first he stumbled, but soon he was galloping joyfully, laughing a sound like wind through trees.

They ran until sunrise, when the Guardian had to return to his oak tree. But he promised he would wake up whenever they ate the magic spinach together.

Now, Luna and Barnaby eat spinach every week. They've learned that sometimes things that seem scary are just lonely, and friendship is the strongest magic of all. And every night, the Guardian leaves a small flower by Luna's window, just to remind her: friends can be found anywhere, even in the most unexpected places.
