The Dog Who Could Fly
Barnaby was no ordinary dog. He had scruffy orange fur that stuck up like porcupine quills, and the wildest hair any puppy had ever seen. But what made him truly special happened on Tuesday afternoons.
That's when Mrs. Higgins served spinach for lunch at the Sunny Side Home for Animals. Barnaby hated spinach—all the dogs did. But this Tuesday was different.
As Barnaby stared at his green mush, something magical occurred. His paws began to tingle. His ears perked up. And suddenly, without meaning to, he lifted two inches off the ground!
"I'm flying!" Barnaby yipped, twirling in mid-air.
The other dogs gasped. Max, the grumpy bulldog who usually made fun of Barnaby's messy hair, stepped forward. "How?"
"I don't know!" Barnaby said, spinning happily. "I was just thinking how much I wished I could run away from this spinach, and then... whoosh!"
That's when Barnaby noticed something strange. Max wasn't laughing. Max wasn't being mean. Max was looking at Barnaby with wide, wondering eyes.
"Can you teach me?" Max whispered.
Barnaby's heart swelled. For months, Max had been his bully. But now, in this magical moment, Max just wanted to fly too.
"I think it's about believing," Barnaby said slowly. "I really, really wished to soar. Maybe you need to find something you wish for with your whole heart."
Max closed his eyes. He thought and thought. Then his face lit up. "I wish I could run faster than anyone!"
Suddenly, Max was running in circles, so fast his paws barely touched the ground. He wasn't flying, but he was running faster than any dog in history!
Mrs. Higgins walked in and gasped. "What in the world?"
The dogs froze. The magic faded. But something had changed forever.
That night, Barnaby and Max sat together under the stars. Max wasn't grumpy anymore. He was Barnaby's best friend.
"You know," Max said, "I learned something today."
"What's that?" Barnaby asked.
"Even grumpy old dogs can dream big dreams," Max said with a smile. "And friends help each other fly—whether it's in the air or in their hearts."
Barnaby's orange fur glowed in the moonlight. Some magic, he realized, doesn't come from spinach at all. The best magic is the kind that turns bullies into friends and makes ordinary days extraordinary.
And sometimes, just sometimes, the most unlikely dogs discover they can fly together.
