The Dog Who Collected Secrets

Lily was afraid of lightning. Every time a storm rumbled through the sky, she hid under her blankets with her stuffed bear. But that changed the night she met Barnaby.

Barnaby was no ordinary dog. He appeared on Lily's porch during a fierce lightning storm, his fur glowing like moonlight. When thunder crashed, he didn't bark or run. Instead, he stood tall and watched the sky with knowing eyes.

"I'm not scared," Barnaby told Lily in her imagination. "I'm a storm spy. I collect secrets from the lightning."

Lily peeked from her blanket. "A spy? Like in stories?"

"Better," Barnaby explained as lightning painted the sky silver. "Every lightning bolt carries messages from clouds to earth. Sadness that needs to fall. Dreams that need to grow. I catch them before they disappear."

That night, Lily joined Barnaby on the porch. Together, they watched lightning write glowing letters across the dark sky. Each flash revealed something magical: a child's wish for a friend, a grandmother's hope for her grandchildren, a dream of flying.

"Why do you collect these?" Lily asked.

"Because," Barnaby said gently, "secrets are heavy when kept alone. But when shared, they become lighter than air. Like your secret — you're lonely at your new school."

Tears filled Lily's eyes. "I have no friends."

Barnaby nudged her hand. "Tomorrow, sit next to the girl who draws lightning in her notebook. She's collecting secrets too."

The next day, Lily found the girl. Her sketchbook was filled with lightning bolts, each one labeled with hopes and dreams. They became best friends, united by their love of storms and secrets.
