The Dog Who Chased Lightning
Barnaby was a small dog with fur the color of burnt toast and ears that flopped when he ran. He lived with Lily, a girl of seven with braids that bounced when she walked.
One evening, as the sky turned the deep orange of a setting sun, a storm rolled in. Dark clouds gathered like mountains of cotton candy. CRACK! Lightning flashed across the sky—a brilliant zigzag of silver light.
Barnaby had never seen anything so beautiful. His tail thumped. His heart raced. He wanted to catch that dancing light.
"Barnaby, no!" Lily called, but Barnaby was already running. He ran through the garden, past the roses and the swing set. He ran toward the open meadow where the lightning seemed to touch the earth.
The rain fell, warm and sudden. Barnaby's fur grew heavy. His paws squished in the mud. But still he ran, chasing each flash, hoping somehow to catch the magic in his jaws.
Suddenly, the most incredible thing happened. A bolt of lightning struck an old orange tree at the edge of the meadow. But instead of burning, the tree GLOWED. Its oranges began to float upward, glowing like tiny moons.
Barnaby stopped, mesmerized. The oranges swirled around him in a gentle spiral, filling the air with the sweet scent of citrus and magic. One by one, they drifted back to the tree, but one small orange remained hovering in front of Barnaby's nose.
He licked it gently.
ZZZT! A spark of blue, like a tiny lightning bolt, jumped from the orange to Barnaby's nose. It didn't hurt—it felt like a tickle, like a secret passed between friends.
When Barnaby returned to Lily, his fur was dry, his eyes were bright, and somehow, in the darkness of the stormy night, he seemed to glow with a faint orange light.
From that day on, Barnaby could always find his way home, even in the darkest dark. And whenever lightning flashed across the sky, he would lift his head and smile, remembering the night he caught a piece of the storm and made it his friend.
Lily called him her Storm Dog. But Barnaby knew the truth: he was just a lucky dog who learned that the most magical things aren't caught by running fast—they find you when you're brave enough to chase your dreams.
