The Dog Who Caught a Star
Barnaby was a small golden dog with floppy ears and a very big dream. Every night, he watched his boy Leo play baseball in the park, and Barnaby wished he could play too.
One afternoon, while Leo was at school, Barnaby found something strange in the backyard. An old cable wire, forgotten by the telephone company years ago, was glowing with a soft purple light. Being a curious and brave dog, Barnaby gave it a gentle tug.
WHOOSH!
The cable lifted him into the sky, carrying him higher than the tallest trees, past the clouds, all the way to the moon! There, resting in a crater of moon dust, sat the Great Moon Sphinx—a friendly creature with the body of a lion and wings like a silver butterfly.
"Welcome, little friend," the Sphinx purred. "I've been waiting forty-two years for someone to find my cable."
The Sphinx explained that she guarded the moon's most precious treasure: a star that had fallen from the sky. But she was lonely, with no one to talk to except the occasional passing comet.
"I love games," she sighed. "Especially baseball. But I haven't played in centuries."
Barnaby's tail wagged so hard it almost knocked him over! He knew about baseball! He'd watched Leo play every day.
For hours, Barnaby taught the Sphinx how to pitch, catch, and hit. They used the fallen star as their baseball—it glowed brighter with every hit! The Sphinx laughed for the first time in a hundred years, and Barnaby felt his heart fill with joy.
"You've given me something wonderful," the Sphinx said, her eyes shining like moonlight. "Friendship is the greatest game anyone can play."
She pressed the star into Barnaby's paw. "Take this home. It will bring light to anyone who needs hope."
When Barnaby returned through the cable, he found Leo crying in the backyard. He'd lost his favorite baseball glove and felt like giving up the sport.
Gently, Barnaby placed the glowing star beside Leo's hand. The boy gasped as warmth spread through his fingers—then he spotted his glove, caught in the tree branches above, illuminated by the star's light.
That night, Barnaby dreamed of sphinxes and starlight, knowing that even the smallest dog can make the biggest difference. All it takes is courage, a little curiosity, and a heart full of friendship.
