The Dog Who Caught a Falling Star

Benny loved two things more than anything: his golden retriever Rusty, and baseball. Every Saturday, they'd play catch in the backyard until the sun painted the sky orange.

One evening, as Benny tossed his favorite baseball high into the air, something magical happened. Rusty leaped gracefully, paws outstretched, but instead of catching the ball, he caught something else—a tiny, glowing spark that fell from the sky.

The spark grew brighter in Rusty's mouth, illuminating his surprised face. It wasn't a baseball at all. It was a baby star that had fallen from the constellation Canis Major—the Great Dog in the night sky.

"We have to help it get home," Benny whispered, eyes wide with wonder.

Rusty seemed to understand. He gently placed the glowing star on the grass, where it pulsed like a tiny heartbeat. But how could they reach the sky?

Then Benny remembered. Behind their garage, there was an old, forgotten cable his dad had stored for years—a thick, silver rope he used for climbing adventures. An idea sparked in Benny's imagination.

"What if we tie the cable to the old oak tree and... and..." Benny's voice trembled with excitement. "What if Rusty climbs it like a magical ladder?"

Rusty barked enthusiastically. The baby star seemed to brighten at the plan.

Benny worked quickly, securing the cable to the sturdy oak tree. Rusty took the star gently in his mouth and began to climb. Up and up he went, paws sure and strong, until he became a small golden silhouette against the moon.

Suddenly, the night sky shimmered. The Great Dog constellation appeared above them, glowing with welcome. Rusty placed the baby star among its brothers and sisters, where it twinkled with joy.

As Rusty climbed down, something wonderful happened. The constellation sent down a stream of sparkling light—tiny stars that landed in their backyard, transforming into beautiful glowing baseballs that would never lose their shine.

From that night on, whenever Benny and Rusty played baseball under the stars, they knew their friend above was watching. And sometimes, if they looked very carefully, they could see the baby star they saved twinkling extra bright, as if winking at them.

Benny learned that true friendship means helping each other reach for the stars—no matter how impossible it might seem.
