The Dog Who Bore Witness

Margaret sat on her porch, her old golden retriever Buster resting his gray muzzle on her slippered feet. Through the **palm** fronds swaying in the breeze, she watched her great-grandchildren playing their favorite game: **spy**. They crept around the garden with cardboard telescopes, whispering about secret missions, just as her children had done forty years ago in this same yard.

Buster lifted his head, ears perking. He'd been the family's steadfast companion through five decades of joy and sorrow. Margaret's hands traced the weathered wood of her rocking chair, remembering how this **dog** had borne witness to everything—first steps, heartbreaks, homecomings, and now, the gentle cycle beginning anew with these little ones.

"Grandma!" called eight-year-old Leo, **running** toward her with a重要 document clutched in his hand. "Look what I found in the attic!"

It was her grandfather's journal, preserved since his days as an actual intelligence officer. The children gasped as she read about his real adventures—nothing like their pretend games, yet full of the same courage.

"Every generation has its secrets," Margaret told them, placing her warm **palm** over Leo's small hand. "But the real secret isn't what you keep hidden. It's what you choose to pass down."

Buster thumped his tail in agreement, and Margaret realized she'd been like that old **bear** in the family stories—strong enough to carry the past, gentle enough to welcome the future. She'd borne witness, too, and now it was time to speak.
