The Dog Who Ate Stars

Lily loved her Saturday afternoons at the community pool. But today, something magical happened. Behind the old shed, she found a small brown dog with one ear that stood straight up and one that flopped down.

The dog was chewing on something green — a leaf from the spinach garden! Lily giggled. 'You like spinach? My little brother hates it!'

The dog looked up with big, warm eyes and wagged his tail so hard his whole body wiggled. Lily named him Spinach.

That afternoon, Lily's baseball team had their biggest game of the year. Lily was terrified. She always struck out. But Spinach followed her to the field, carrying something in his mouth — a thick piece of cable he'd found near the pool equipment shed.

'Spinach, what are you doing?' Lily asked.

The dog dropped the cable at her feet. It shimmered in the sunlight. Something about it felt... magical. When Lily picked it up, she could hear a faint humming sound, like when you hold a seashell to your ear.

Suddenly, the cable glowed golden. Lily heard a whisper: *Believe in yourself, and you will fly.*

She looked at Spinach. The dog barked confidently and nudged her toward home plate.

Lily stepped up to bat, still holding the glowing cable. The pitcher threw the ball. It looked bigger and slower than usual. Lily swung — and heard the most beautiful sound in the world. *CRACK!*

The ball sailed over the fence. A home run!

Her teammates cheered. Spinach bounded around her, barking happily. Lily looked down at the cable in her hand. The glow had faded, but the magic remained.

'You did this, didn't you?' she whispered to Spinach. The dog just licked her face.

From that day on, Lily was never afraid at bat again. She kept the cable in her pocket, a reminder that magic exists for those who believe, and sometimes it comes with four paws, floppy ears, and a love for spinach.

Every Saturday, Lily and Spinach returned to the pool, ready for their next adventure — together.
