The Dog Who Ate My Social Life

My parents got Max the summer before freshman year, which meant I spent the most crucial social window of my life walking a 90-pound golden retriever with zero chill and an appetite for disaster.

Max didn't just fetch balls—he bullied smaller dogs at the park, stole sandwiches from picnics, and once ate someone's homework. I'd be dragging him away from another crime scene while my phone blew up with group chats I was too busy to join. My social life was basically a crime scene anyway.

Enter Tyler, the senior who ran Northwood High's invisible pyramid like he invented the concept of popularity. He sat at the top with his varsity jacket and perfect smile, while I floated somewhere near the bottom with Max and my increasingly pathetic excuses for skipping parties.

So naturally, when Max bolted after a squirrel and straight into Tyler's perfectly curated backyard party, I wanted to die.

I found Max face-deep in a bowl of guacamole while Tyler stood over him, arms crossed, looking like he was deciding between calling animal control or actually murdering me.

"That's my dog," I said, because apparently I'd lost my will to live. "I'm so sorry, I'll—"

"Is this the dog who ate Mrs. Henderson's prize-winning hydrangeas last week?" Tyler asked, and I froze.

Word traveled fast in our neighborhood. "He... he has opinions about landscaping."

Tyler's mouth twitched. Then he was laughing—not mean laughing, but actual laughing. "Dude, my mom's been complaining about those hydrangeas for months. She hated them anyway."

He helped me clean guacamole off Max's face while his friends watched, confused. We talked about everything and nothing—how fake the whole popularity pyramid was, how he actually wanted to study art not business, how Max was objectively the worst dog but also kind of perfect.

"You should come to the bonfire next weekend," Tyler said, like it was nothing. Like the pyramid hadn't just collapsed on itself.

I showed up with Max. He ate three hot dogs and made friends with everyone, even the scary seniors. Turns out the whole pyramid thing was just people waiting for someone else to knock it over first.

Max still eats homework. But now he's got a whole crew of accomplices.
