The Dog Who Ate My Cool

Marcus stood at the edge of the pool, clutching his snapback like it was his last shred of dignity. The hottest party of sophomore year was happening around him, and he was fully clothed while everyone else was cannonballing into the water.

"Yo Marcus, you gonna stand there all day?" called Tyler, floating on an inflatable unicorn with a red Solo cup balanced precariously on his head. "Even Mrs. Johnson's pug is living more than you right now."

Sure enough, the pug—a wrinkly, bug-eyed dog named Pickles—was paddling circles around a gaggle of girls who were all cooing like he'd discovered a cure for acne. Marcus's palms were sweating so badly he could practically water plants with them.

He was about to make a strategic retreat to the snack table when Tyler's little brother, a seventh-grader with zero survival instincts, decided to ride the family's mechanical bull set up in the backyard. The kid lasted exactly two seconds before face-planting into the grass, but nobody cared because then Pickles the pug shook himself off like a sprinkler and started zooming around the pool area, freshly baptized and absolutely unhinged.

The dog made a beeline for Marcus, found his hat absolutely fascinating, and before Marcus could react, Pickles had snatched it and bolted toward the deep end.

"No! Pickles! Bad dog! That's my lucky hat!"

Marcus launched himself into the pool without thinking, fully clothed, phone in pocket, chasing a dog who was now paddling happily with his snapback clamped triumphantly in his teeth. The cold water shocked him, but the laughter that rippled across the pool area was worse.

Then he surfaced, gasping, to find Maya—the Maya who sat three rows behind him in English class, who always wore oversized hoodies and smelled like coconut—laughing so hard she'd fallen off her pool float.

"That," she said, wiping water from her eyes, "was literally the most legendary thing I've ever seen."

Pickles finally dropped the hat. Marcus retrieved it, soggy but intact, and noticed Maya was still looking at him with something like actual interest.

"Your phone's probably dead," she said.

"Worth it," Marcus replied, and meant it.

Some nights you lose your dignity, your phone, and your dry clothes. Some nights you find out that the girl you've been lowkey crushing on thinks you're legendary. Either way, you're never going to forget the day a pug stole your cool at a pool party, and somehow, that was exactly when you finally found it.
