The Dog Walker

zombiedogpadelhairwater

Elena moved through her Tuesday like a zombie, the fluorescent lights of the law firm draining something essential from her with each billable hour. At 47, she'd mastered the art of looking alive while feeling entirely hollow inside.

Then she saw him at the padel court—her ex-husband's younger brother, Julian, sweat-dampened hair falling across his forehead as he smashed a serve past his opponent. Elena had forgotten she'd booked the court for 7 PM, forgotten until her phone buzzed with the reminder, forgotten until she was already standing there with rented racket in hand.

"Elena?" Julian's face split into something like genuine pleasure, and then his dog—a chaotic golden retriever mix—bounded toward her, nearly knocking her over with enthusiasm. "Buster! Sit! Sorry, he's usually better behaved."

"It's fine." She found herself smiling, a strange sensation after months of flat affect. "I didn't know you played."

They played until Elena's muscles burned, until the water from the fountain tasted like salvation, until she noticed the way Julian's hair curled at his neck when wet, the way his eyes crinkled when he laughed at her terrible backhand. They sat on the bench afterward, Buster sprawled between them like a conspirator.

"Mark said you left him," Julian said quietly, no judgment in his tone. "Said you walked out with nothing but your clothes."

"I felt like I was dying," Elena heard herself say, the words foreign on her tongue. "Like I'd been dead for years and my body just hadn't gotten the memo."

Julian's hand covered hers, warm and alive. "You look different now. More... present."

"Maybe." She watched the water drip from her hair onto the concrete, dark circles blooming and fading. "Maybe I'm finally waking up."

"Good," Julian said. "Stay awake, Elena. It's better out here."

Later, in the shower of her small apartment, she washed away the salt and sweat and something else—the numbness that had kept her safe and stagnant for half her life. For the first time in months, Elena looked forward to tomorrow, a zombie no longer.
