The Dog That Broke The Ice

Maya stood by the **pool**, clutching her orange soda like a lifeline. The seniors from North High were everywhere—laughing, dancing, doing cannonballs that sent water flying everywhere. Meanwhile, she was a sophomore whose idea of partying was watching Netflix with her cat.

"You okay?" asked Liam, the guy she'd been low-key crushing on since algebra. His dark hair was wet, **orange** swim trunks dripping.

"Yeah. Just... taking it all in." She wiped her sweaty **palm** on her denim shorts. Why did she say that? So lame.

Then chaos arrived.

A golden retriever—someone's **dog**, clearly—burst through the back gate, barking like it had just won the lottery. It thundered toward the **pool**, tail going a hundred miles an hour, and launched itself into a perfect Olympic-style dive.

Screams. Laughter. People scrambled out of the water like it had turned to lava. The **dog** emerged, shaking water everywhere like it was confetti.

Maya started laughing before she could stop herself. Not the polite giggle she'd been doing all night. Real laughter.

Liam looked at her, grinning. "That was actually kind of epic."

"Right? That **dog** has more confidence than everyone here combined."

"Including me," he admitted. "I've been pretending to know how to swim for twenty minutes. I mostly just splash dramatically and hope nobody notices."

Maya's eyes widened. "Wait, really?"

"Total fraud. My grandma has better form." He held out his hand—his **palm** was warm when she high-fived him. "Wanna go stand somewhere less chaotic? I saw they have pizza inside."

"Only if I can get another **orange** soda. This one's tragically empty."

"Deal."

As they walked away from the **pool**, Maya caught her reflection in the sliding glass door. She was smiling for real now, the nervous energy finally gone. Sometimes it took a chaotic **dog** crashing a party to remind you that the coolest people weren't the ones performing—they were the ones laughing at the performance instead of trying to be in it.
