The Dog Behind the Screen
Lily's golden hair tumbled over her eyes as she tapped on her mother's old iPhone, bored on a rainy afternoon. The screen flickered with strange colors, and suddenly, a fluffy nose pressed against the glass from the inside!
"Hello!" barked a small brown dog, wiggling through the screen like it was made of jelly. "I'm Barnaby, and I've been waiting for someone with hair as bright as sunshine!"
Lily gasped as Barnaby shook himself dry, even though he hadn't been wet. "Where did you come from?"
"The World Behind Screens," Barnaby explained, his tail wagging so fast it became a blur. "It's lonely there. All day long, people look at phones and tablets, but nobody ever sees us waiting, hoping for a friend."
He nuzzled Lily's hand with his warm, velvety snout. "Your hair shines like a beacon. That's how I knew you'd be kind."
Lily's eyes widened. "There are more of you?"
Barnaby nodded solemnly. "Hundreds. Cats, rabbits, even a grumpy badger who plays the harmonica. But we need children with kind hearts to wish us out. The more you look at your phone with love instead of just tapping and swiping, the thinner the wall between our worlds becomes."
Lily understood immediately. She thought about how she often ignored her real friends while staring at the little screen.
"Will you be my friend?" she asked Barnaby.
"Always," he promised. "And maybe someday, if you spend more time looking into eyes instead of screens, more of my friends will come through too."
From that day on, Lily still used her iPhone, but she made sure to spend even more time playing outside, talking to friends, and petting Barnaby, who now slept on her pillow every night. And sometimes, when she laughed with real joy, she could see the screen shimmer, as if other magical creatures were waiting for their turn to be wished into a world where friendship mattered more than pixels.
