The Deep End Test
Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her iPhone like a lifeline. The screen glowed with an unanswered text from her mom — "Have fun!" — as if fun were something you could just summon on command.
Around her, the birthday party raged. Chloe's house. Chloe's pool. Chloe's perfect social pyramid where she reigned at the top, surrounded by her loyal subjects who somehow all knew when to laugh, when to dive in, when to pretend they weren't checking their phones every five seconds.
Maya checked Instagram. Another story from the party. Someone had already posted a photo of the group looking impossibly cool, floaties in hand, against the twilight sky.
"Maya! You coming in?" Chloe called from the shallow end, already surrounded by three girls whose names Maya kept mixing up.
"Yeah! Just... one sec!" Maya's voice cracked. She adjusted her bikini top for the fiftieth time. Why did she agree to come? She barely knew Chloe. They'd had, like, two conversations in math class before somehow being lumped into the same friend group through mutual friends of friends.
Social dynamics were exhausting. Some days it felt like everyone else had gotten a manual she'd missed.
A splash next to her. Maya jumped, nearly dropping her phone in the water.
"Sorry," said a guy she recognized from English. Quinn. He climbed out of the pool, shaking water from his dark hair. "I slipped. Graceful, right?"
Maya snorted before she could stop herself. "Smooth."
"I live here." Quinn grinned, wiping his face. "You okay? You've been hovering for, like, ten minutes."
"Just... thinking."
"About jumping?" Quinn guessed. "Don't overthink it. That's how you chicken out. You just gotta..." He shrugged. "Commit to the splat."
"The splat?"
"The moment your skin hits the water. It's awful for like three seconds, then you're fine." Quinn leaned back on his hands, dripping onto the concrete. "High school in a nutshell, honestly."
Maya laughed. For real this time. "That's weirdly poetic."
"I have my moments." Quinn stood up. "Race you to the deep end?"
"What?"
"Unless you're scared."
Maya looked at her phone, then at the pool, then at Chloe and her friends still laughing together in the shallow end. The social pyramid suddenly seemed smaller from this angle. Less like a mountain to climb and more like... just people in a pool.
"You're on."
She locked her iPhone and placed it carefully on a dry chair. Then she dove into the deep end, not thinking about how she looked or who was watching or whether she was doing it right.
The water shocked her skin, cold and perfect. When she surfaced, gasping, Quinn was already there, grinning.
"Told you. Three seconds of awful. Now we're just swimming."
