The Deep End of July

Maya's palms sweat against her iPhone as she stood at the edge of the pool, watching Jake laugh with the varsity baseball team. He looked effortless in his swim trunks, tossing a baseball back and forth with Tyler like he hadn't a care in the world. Meanwhile, Maya was stuck in the shallow end, clutching her phone like a lifeline.

"You going in or what?" her best friend Chloe whispered, shoving her lightly. "Jake literally just looked at you."

Maya's stomach did that familiar flip-flop. She'd been crushing on Jake since seventh grade, and now at fifteen, she was still stuck in the maybe-someday zone. Her phone buzzed—another group chat notification about the zombie movie marathon happening later tonight. Everyone was going, including Jake. This was her chance.

The backyard transformed as the sun set. Someone projected a zombie apocalypse film onto the garage wall, and kids sprawled across pool floats and lawn chairs, sharing blankets and popcorn. Maya found herself squished between Chloe and—her heart nearly stopped—Jake.

"Hey," he said, his arm brushing hers. "You come to every one of these things?"

She shrugged, trying to play it cool. "Only when the zombie selection is top-tier."

He laughed, and suddenly they were talking about everything—baseball stats, their zombie survival plans, how his parents wanted him to focus on sports recruitment when he secretly wanted to study film. Maya felt like she was swimming in deep waters, but for once, she wasn't afraid of drowning.

When the movie ended and people started drifting toward late-night swimming, Jake stood up and extended his hand. "You coming? The water's actually decent."

Maya hesitated, then grabbed his hand. Her iPhone sat forgotten on a lawn chair as she dove into the pool, surfacing to find Jake grinning at her through the splash. Some zombie movie character screamed in the background, but in that moment, everything felt perfectly alive.
