The Dead of Night

The apartment complex swimming pool at 3 AM was its own kind of church. Elena had claimed this hour as hers alone, a ritual of silence and water that kept her from becoming something she didn't recognize. The night air bit at her skin as she slipped into the pool, the cold water a shock that always felt like waking up.

She was twelve laps in when the first flash of lightning split the sky, illuminating the courtyard with a harsh, clinical brightness. She kept swimming. The storm was still miles away. By the time the thunder caught up, she would be back in her apartment, pretending her marriage wasn't already dead.

"You're going to get yourself killed," a voice called from the pool deck.

Elena stopped mid-stroke, treading water. It was Marcus from 4B, the one who always wore that ridiculous fedora hat like it was still 1920. He was standing in the rain that had just started to fall, clutching a glass of wine like it was the only thing keeping him upright.

"Since when do you care?" she asked, not swimming to the edge. Not yet.

"Since you started doing this every night." Marcus took a sip of wine. "Since the divorce papers came. Since you've been moving through the world like a zombie, Elena. Like someone who forgot she's still alive."

The words hit harder than the cold water had. She thought she'd been hiding it so well—the silent apartment, the unchecked phone, the swimming until her arms burned. But Marcus saw what no one else did. Maybe because he was broken too, in his own way.

Another flash of lightning, closer now. The rain came harder.

"Get out of the pool," Marcus said, his voice gentler this time. "Come have a drink with me instead. We can be dead together inside, where it's warm. It's better than dying alone out here."

Elena swam to the edge. For the first time in months, something in her chest felt light. She pulled herself out of the water, and Marcus handed her his glass without a word. She drank, and it tasted like forgiveness.
