The Dead Don't Play Padel

The cat watched from the windowsill as Mara slipped the cloned iPhone into her purse. Her hands trembled—not from fear, but from the peculiar numbness that had settled in her chest three months ago, when Daniel stopped looking her in the eye.

She'd become a spy in her own marriage. Not because she suspected another woman, but because she'd stopped recognizing the man sharing her bed. The Daniel who returned from work each evening was something hollowed-out, eyes glassy, movements sluggish. A zombie of the man she'd married.

The tracker led her to a padel court at 11 PM, where Daniel moved with a grace she hadn't witnessed in years. He played alone, hitting ball after ball against the wall, each stroke precise, fluid, utterly alive.

Mara stepped from the shadows. Daniel turned, racquet still raised, and for a moment, she saw terror flash across his face. Then collapse.

"I know about the iPhone," he said quietly. "I knew you'd follow."

He explained nothing that night. But later, in bed, he finally spoke. The job. The threats. The corporate espionage he'd been forced into, stealing secrets one click at a time, becoming someone he couldn't recognize. Each tap on that screen had hollowed him out further.

"I'm tired, Mara," he whispered. "I'm so fucking tired of being dead."

The cat jumped onto the bed, purring fiercely, as if demanding they choose life. In the morning, Mara called a lawyer—not a divorce attorney, but a whistleblower lawyer. They would burn it all down if they had to.

Daniel took up padel again. This time, she joined him.
