The Day the Water Ran Away
Lily loved summer more than anything. Every morning, she'd peek through her window at the blue swimming pool in the backyard. Today was going to be perfect for swimming!
But when Lily ran outside in her favorite pink swimsuit, she couldn't believe her eyes. The water was climbing out of the pool!
First came a small trickle, then a stream, then rivers of blue water streaming across the grass like hundreds of tiny rivers. The water was running away!
"Wait! Come back!" Lily called, chasing after the escaping water. Her bare feet splashed through the wet grass as the poolwater led her on a merry chase through the garden, past the surprised roses, around the corner of the house, and into the woods behind her yard.
The water stopped at a beautiful hidden pond Lily had never seen before. Crystal clear and sparkling with sunlight, the pond was home to a family of sad-looking frogs.
"Our home pond dried up," explained the biggest frog. "We had nowhere to go."
Lily understood! The swimming pool water had run away to help the frogs. She watched in wonder as the water filled the little pond, making it perfect for the frog family.
"Thank you!" croaked the frogs joyfully.
Lily's heart felt warm and happy. She realized something important: sometimes the best adventures are the ones you don't plan, and kindness is more important than swimming.
That evening, Lily sat by the frog pond, watching her new friends splash in their beautiful home. The water that had run away to help someone in need had taught her the most wonderful lesson of all.
"Being a hero," Lily whispered to a smiling frog, "is even better than swimming."
