The Day My Hat Betrayed Me

I spent forty-five minutes on my hair that morning. Forty-five. Because Alex was gonna be at Maya's party, and I needed every possible advantage. My curls finally cooperated—artfully messy, like I'd just rolled out of bed looking gorgeous.

Then came the hat.

Mom insisted the vintage fedora "completed the outfit." I wanted to disappear, but she drove me to the party anyway, and I figured I'd ditch it the second I walked in. Except one problem: I spent so much time worrying about Alex, I forgot about the hummus platter.

I was mid-conversation with Katie—actually talking about how nervous I was—when she stopped mid-sentence. Her eyes went wide.

"You've got..." She pointed at her teeth.

I froze. The spinach dip. The absolutely massive chunk of green wedged between my front teeth, probably visible from space.

Then my moment came. I could've laughed it off. Instead, I yanked my hat down low like I could just disappear into vintage felt oblivion. Except hats don't make you invisible. They make you look like you're hiding something.

Everyone noticed. Including Alex.

"Nice hat," he said, grinning. "The spinach really pulls it together."

I wanted to die. But then something weird happened—Katie started laughing. Not mean laughing, but like, actual genuine laughter. Maya joined in. Then Alex.

I took off the hat. My hair was wrecked—hat hair, flat and weirdly staticky.

"You know what?" I said. "This is exactly who I am. Dip disasters and all."

Alex shrugged. "Honestly? It's kinda refreshing."

We're hanging out next Friday. I'm wearing the hat. And maybe I'll even bring spinach.
