The Day My Hair Turned Golden
Lily woke up one Tuesday morning and something felt strange. Her normally brown hair was shimmering like spun gold! She ran to the mirror and gasped – tiny sparkles danced through her golden curls whenever she moved.
Her pet goldfish, Finley, swam to the front of his bowl and blew bubbles that formed tiny floating words. 'Your hair has magic!' the bubbles seemed to say. Lily giggled as she watched her goldfish swimming excitedly in circles.
'Mom says spinach makes you strong,' Lily remembered, 'but she never said it would give me magic hair!' She had eaten extra spinach at dinner last night, just like her big brother who was strong enough to lift their dog.
Suddenly, Finley jumped right out of his bowl! But instead of flopping on the floor like a normal fish, he began swimming through the air as if it were water. His scales glowed the same golden color as Lily's hair.
'Follow me!' Finley seemed to say, darting toward Lily's iPhone on her nightstand. When Lily touched her phone, the screen rippled like a pond. A whole underwater world appeared inside it!
Lily held her breath as Finney swam right into the phone screen. Then she felt herself being pulled in too – whoosh! She was swimming beside Finley in a magical ocean where the fish were made of rainbows and the coral was made of candy.
'This spinach really was magical!' Lily laughed, doing somersaults in the sparkling water.
They played for hours, but Finley finally nudged Lily toward a bubble that said 'HOME.' 'Time to go back,' he seemed to say.
When Lily woke up in her bed, her hair was brown again. But on her nightstand, next to her iPhone, sat a tiny perfect pearl shell – and inside it, a miniature fish made of solid gold.
Lily smiled and ate two big servings of spinach at dinner that night. Some magic is worth trying for again.
Moral: Sometimes the most ordinary things – like eating your vegetables – can lead to the most extraordinary adventures.
