The Day I Ran the Social Pyramid
My social life at Ridge Creek High was basically a pyramid, and I was somewhere near the bottom—probably the sediment underneath. I existed. That was it.
Then came the baseball tryouts freshman year.
I'd been practicing my swing for weeks, Dad drilling me on fundamentals like I was heading to the majors. But standing in the batter's box that Tuesday, everything changed. The pitcher wound up, and I swung so hard I literally spun myself into the dirt. Bat went flying. Helmet went rolling. My dignity? Gone.
"Smooth," Marcus said, sliding into the bleacher seat beside me. He was a junior, which basically made him a god in the teenage hierarchy. "At least you didn't faceplant."
"Give it time," I muttered.
"Wanna hang out?" Marcus asked. Like, casually. Like this wasn't a huge deal.
We ended up at the creek behind his house, just skipping stones and talking. That's when Barnaby showed up.
"Is that... a bear?" I asked, staring at the massive black beast lumbering toward us.
"That's Barnaby," Marcus said, like this was normal. "He hangs around sometimes. My dad says he's probably someone's pet that got too big."
The bear—Barnaby—sat down and looked at us expectantly.
"He wants a snack," Marcus said, digging into his backpack. "Don't worry, he's chill."
But then Barnaby stood up and started running toward us, and instinct took over. I grabbed my backpack and bolted, Marcus right beside me, both of us sprinting through the woods like our lives depended on it.
We didn't stop until we reached the road, chests heaving, branches stuck in our hair. Marcus doubled over laughing.
"We just ran from a bear named Barnaby," he said. "This is officially the weirdest day ever."
"Your life is chaos," I said, grinning despite myself.
"Yeah," Marcus said. "But it's never boring."
That was the moment I realized something important: the social pyramid wasn't about climbing carefully planned steps. Sometimes you just had to embrace the chaos—the strikeouts, the bears, the running scared through the woods—and see where it landed you.
Marcus and I have been best friends since. And yeah, I didn't make the baseball team. But I found something better: a friend who thinks a bear named Barnaby is just part of a normal Tuesday.
Somehow, that feels like winning.
