The Curly-Hair Magic Spy

hairfriendspy

Lily had the most enormous, bouncy, curly hair in the whole third grade. Her hair sprang out like a golden halo, always tangling and always wild. But nobody knew her secret—her hair could sense magic!

One afternoon, while playing hide-and-seek in her garden, Lily's curls started tingling. *Bingle-bingle-BUZZ!* They only did that near something magical! Lily followed the wiggle-bounce of her favorite curl until she peeked behind a pumpkin.

There sat the tiniest boy she'd ever seen—no bigger than her thumb! He wore a suit made of flower petals and held a notebook made of a single leaf.

"Are you a SPY?" Lily whispered, eyes wide.

The tiny boy jumped. "I'm Milo, Chief Magic Scout!" he squeaked. "I spy on human children to see which ones are kind enough to visit the fairy kingdom."

Lily's heart thumped. A real fairy scout! In her garden!

"Will you be my FRIEND?" she asked softly.

Milo smiled. "Only if you pass the kindness test!"

He explained his hair had gotten messy from flying through brambles. Lily gently untangled his tiny hair with her pinky finger. Then she shared her favorite strawberry with him.

"You passed!" Milo cheered. "You're the kindest human I've spied on all week!"

He sprinkled golden dust on her. Suddenly, Lily could see dozens of tiny fairies hiding everywhere—under leaves, inside flowers, behind stones. They'd all been "spying" too!

"We just wanted to find friends," Milo explained.

Lily grinned. She'd always suspected her hair was magical. Now she knew—it led her to the most wonderful friend she could imagine. And best of all, she learned that sometimes, the things that seem mysterious or scary might just be lonely creatures hoping for friendship, just like her.
