The Court Spy

bullspypadel

Maya had perfected the art of being invisible. At Crestwood Academy, where designer backpacks cost more than her family's car payment, she'd become a master of observation. A spy in her own school.

Every lunch period, she'd claim her corner table and watch. That's when she noticed him—the guy everyone called "The Bull." Lucas didn't look like a bully, exactly. He was just ... loud. Solid. The kind of person who took up space without apologizing for it. And he dominated the padel court behind the gym like he owned it.

Padel had arrived at Crestwood like an invasion. Suddenly everyone carried those funny square racquets and talked about "smashes" and "chiquitas." Maya had zero interest in fitting in, until the day she found herself behind the gym, waiting for her mom to pick her up late.

The Bull was there alone, hitting balls against the wall. Rhythm. Thwack. Thwack. Like a heartbeat.

"You spyin' on me, Maya?" He'd turned around without stopping.

Her face burned. "I'm just waiting."

"You ever play?"

She shook her head.

"Here." He tossed her a racquet. "Fair warning: I hit like a bull."

Her first swing was pathetic. The ball dribbled off her racquet and died at her feet. Lucas didn't laugh. He adjusted her grip. "Loosen up. You're holding it like you're scared it'll bite."

They played for twenty minutes. Her arms ached. Her ponytail was falling apart. But for the first time all year, she wasn't watching from the sidelines.

"Tomorrow?" he asked afterward.

"Tomorrow," she agreed.

The next day, Maya walked through the cafeteria holding a racquet she'd borrowed from the lost-and-found. The same popular kids who'd never noticed her before looked up. The Bull waved from his table.

She wasn't invisible anymore. She wasn't a spy in her own life. And Lucas? Turns out everyone called him "Bull" because he charged into everything—sports, friendships, life—with zero hesitation.

Maya smiled. She could learn from that.
