The Court of Lost Things

Elena's hair used to be her crowning glory—thick, chestnut waves that men couldn't help but touch. Now it was a jagged, chin-length mess she'd cut herself with kitchen shears three weeks after discovering Marcus's affair. The mirror showed a stranger with defiant, uneven ends and eyes that refused to cry anymore.

"You're playing differently," Sarah said from across the padel court, wiping sweat from her forehead. They'd been playing every Tuesday since Elena's divorce was finalized. "More aggressive."

Elena slammed the ball against the wall, the crack echoing through the empty club. "I'm done letting things bounce off me."

Her padel partner nodded, understanding without asking. They'd both been left—Sarah by her husband's choosing, Elena by her husband's betrayal. The sport had become their therapy, the enclosed court a place where they could hit something as hard as they wanted and call it exercise.

Afterward, they sat on the bench, sharing water. Elena reached into her bag and pulled out the old panama hat she'd found while cleaning out Marcus's side of the closet. He'd bought it in Barcelona years ago, on that trip where they'd still held hands in public.

"Found this," Elena said, turning it over in her hands. "Should I burn it?"

Sarah smiled, that knowing smile of someone who'd survived. "Or you could wear it."

"What?"

"Wear it. Take back the parts of yourself you gave away. The hat, the game, the hair you're still growing into. Make them yours, not his."

Elena put it on, tilting the brim. In the reflection of the club window, she saw herself—really saw herself—for the first time in years. The uneven hair, the fierce eyes, the hat that was now hers.

"Next Tuesday," Elena said, standing up. "Same time."

"Bring the racket," Sarah called back. "Bring everything you've got."
