The Court King's Crown
Maya's $8 Hydro Flask felt pathetic next to the glittery, sticker-covered collection on the bench. Fifty-ounce Stanley cups with custom-name vinyls. Limited edition collabs. Meanwhile, her water bottle looked like it had survived a natural disaster.
"You coming?"
Nate stood at the padel court, his racket resting against his shoulder like he owned the place—which, technically, his kind of did. Padel had exploded at their school over summer break, and if you weren't playing, you weren't existing.
"Yeah," Maya said, her voice doing that weird shaky thing it did when she was nervous. "Just—"
She fumbled in her bag, fingers closing around the plastic vitamin bottle. Chewable multis shaped like cartoon bears. She'd started taking them because her mom said they'd help with "stress and growth," which felt like code for "please have a normal adolescence."
"What are those?" Chloe tilted her head, her limited-edition strawberry lemonade Hydro Flask catching the sun.
"Just... vitamins?" Why did it sound like a question?
"Oh my god, same!" Chloe's energy shifted so fast Maya nearly got whiplash. "I take those gummy hair ones. Have you tried the collagen ones?"
The conversation spiraled into supplement discourse—vegan capsules vs gummies, morning routines, the girl on TikTok who swore by magnesium. Maya survived.
Then it happened.
Nate smashed a serve that ricocheted off the back wall and connected with Chloe's massive cup. The impact was spectacular. Water exploded everywhere. Limited edition stickers met their doom. The collective gasp was audible from across the rec center.
"My STANLEY!"
"My bad," Nate said, but he was smirking.
Without thinking, Maya shoved her Hydro Flask forward. "Here. Use mine."
The silence stretched.
"It's... not fancy," she added. "But it's clean."
Chloe looked at Maya's beat-up bottle, then at the puddle around her fallen warrior, then back at Maya.
"Thanks," she said, and something in her voice changed.
They finished the match, and Maya accidentally vibed with the coolest people she'd spent all summer trying to impress. No sticker collection required. Later, when Nate suggested they come back tomorrow, Maya's vitamin bottle stayed in her bag.
