The Corporate Undead

Emma sat in her corner office on the 44th floor, watching lightning fracture the Manhattan sky. She was thirty-four and already felt like a zombie moving through the motions of a career she'd stopped caring about years ago. Below her, the city's lights formed a glittering pyramid of ambition, each tier filled with people climbing over each other for a view they'd eventually take for granted.

Her phone buzzed. Another email from David, the man she'd been having an affair with for six months. David, who sat two floors down in a cubicle she used to occupy. David, who reminded her of the person she was before she became whatever this was—successful, hollow, preserved in corporate formaldehyde.

The affair had started during a quarterly review that dragged on for hours. They'd both looked at each other across the conference table and recognized the same deadened light in each other's eyes. It wasn't love. It was recognition. Two zombies finding each other in the apocalypse of American corporate life.

Now lightning illuminated her reflection in the window—dark circles, expensive blazer, the face of someone who'd forgotten how to want anything. She thought about David's wife. Thought about the pyramid of lies she'd built, careful and calculated. Thought about how easy it was to keep climbing when you stopped caring what you were climbing toward.

Her phone buzzed again. "Can you get away?"

Emma stood up. She walked to the window and pressed her hand against the glass, feeling the storm's electricity vibrate through her palm. For the first time in years, something real stirred in her chest—not desire, not ambition, but something sharper. The lightning flashed again, and in that brief illumination, she saw her own ghost standing behind her, watching.

She picked up her phone and typed back: "No. I'm done being dead."

Then she opened her email and started drafting her resignation.
