The Corporate Sphinx's Last Inning

I swallowed my daily vitamin with lukewarm coffee, the bitter pill catching in my throat like all the secrets I'd swallowed over fifteen years of corporate espionage. My handler called it "competitive intelligence"—I called it selling pieces of my soul to the highest bidder.

The target sat across from me at the upscale Italian restaurant, pushing spinach around his pasta plate. Arthur Vance, CEO of OmniCorp, had no idea the woman sharing his appetizer was a spy who'd already photographed the documents on his phone during his bathroom break.

"You look tired," he said, his eyes crinkling with genuine concern. That was the problem with Arthur—he was decent. He treated his employees well, donated to charity, called his mother every Sunday. The kind of man who'd soon be destroyed by people like me.

"Long week," I said, forcing a smile. "What's your team?"

Baseball. His face lit up. "Cubs fan, born and bred. Season tickets, third base line."

I felt something tighten in my chest—the way it always did when targets showed me their humanity. Arthur described his father taking him to Wrigley Field, the smell of hot dogs and cut grass, the summer sun warming their shoulders. I watched his hands—gentle hands that signed paychecks, held his granddaughter, pet his rescue dogs.

He was an artifact in the digital age, a man who built things instead of dismantling them. He reminded me of the Great Sphinx of Giza, silently watching empires rise and fall while remaining fundamentally unchanged. Arthur would survive the hostile takeover my firm was orchestrating, but his version of the company wouldn't.

"My mother always said baseball was life," Arthur continued, oblivious to the way I was memorizing his passwords from his unlocked phone on the table. "Long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of terror."

The check came. I insisted on paying.

Two weeks later, OmniCorp's board voted Arthur out. Back at my apartment, I swallowed my daily vitamin with lukewarm coffee and watched the Cubs game alone, wondering if the sphinx ever questioned why it kept watching.
