The Corporate Sphinx

The first time Marcus saw Elena, she was demolishing him at padel. Her backhand sliced through the humid air of the club's court 3, each strike precise, predatory. He was running on fumes—three hours of sleep, another twelve-hour day at the firm. His knees buckled as he lunged for a volley he had no chance of reaching.

"You're playing like your bonus depends on it," Elena said afterward, when they were both dripping sweat beside the bench. She smirked, but her eyes remained flat, evaluating.

"Doesn't everything?" Marcus replied, then instantly regretted it. Too honest. Too transparent.

She was the newly appointed Senior VP. He was middle management, stuck in the pyramid's middle layer—close enough to see the summit, far enough to know he'd never reach it. Or so he thought.

Three weeks later, Marcus found himself in Elena's office, the door closed. She sat behind her desk like a sphinx carved from marble, her expression unreadable, her silence a riddle he was expected to solve without speaking.

"The Chicago expansion," she said finally. "I need someone to run it."

Marcus's pulse hammered. This was it—the opportunity he'd been running toward for a decade, the thing that kept him on the treadmill while his marriage quietly dissolved, while his friends stopped calling.

"I'm interested," he managed.

"There's a catch," Elena said, leaning forward. "The board wants someone younger. Someone hungrier."

"I'm hungry enough."

"Are you?" She studied him. "Because I remember you on that padel court, Marcus. You were exhausted. You were running on empty. And you still wouldn't let me win."

He understood then—she wasn't offering him Chicago. She was offering him something more dangerous: a partnership built on mutual recognition of the game's rigged nature, and two players ruthless enough to keep playing anyway.

"I won't let you win now either," Marcus said.

Elena's smile was the first genuine thing he'd ever seen from her. "Good. Then we'll destroy them together."
