The Corporate Retreat

The cat belonged to the resort manager, a calico that wandered between the cabanas like it owned the place. Marcus watched it from his chaise lounge, nursing a gin and tonic he'd been sipping for two hours. The padel courts were empty now—his matches with Elena from accounting had ended three hours ago, but the way she'd looked at him across the net still lingered.

"You play like you're afraid to lose," she'd said, her voice carrying that strange mix of professional distance and personal challenge that defined their entire relationship. She was right, of course. Marcus played everything safely—his career, his marriage, his life.

The corporate trainer had started the retreat with that fucking pyramid exercise. You know the one—arrange yourselves in a hierarchy based on perceived value to the company. Marcus had stood in the middle third, while Elena—smart, ambitious Elena—had climbed near the top, laughing as she displaced the VP of Sales.

"What are you afraid of?" she asked him later over drinks by the pool, the calico cat winding around their legs.

Marcus had almost told her everything. About the embezzlement investigation. About how he'd been too cowardly to report it, then too complicit to stop it. About the pyramid scheme within the pyramid scheme—the whole company built on fraud, and him standing in the middle, collecting his paycheck.

Instead he'd said: "Nothing."

Now the cat jumped onto his chaise, purring with the confidence of someone who knew secrets. Marcus finished his drink and stood up. The padel racquet leaned against the table, Elena's number written on the handle in black marker.

He picked it up, dialed the number.

"Meet me on the court," he said when she answered. "One more game."

"Afraid to lose?" she asked, and he could hear the smile in her voice.

"No," Marcus said, and for the first time in years, it was true. "I'm ready to play."
