The Corporate Pyramid Scheme

The coaxial cable lay coiled like a dead snake across her apartment floor, a reminder of the life she'd abandoned. Mara stared at it while her cat, Bast, wove between her ankles, demanding breakfast. The animal had been her only constant through three years of climbing the corporate pyramid at Veridian Dynamics.

She'd finally reached the apex—or what she'd thought was the apex—only to discover it was built on bones. Yesterday's board meeting had shattered everything. The pyramid wasn't a structure to ascend; it was a tomb designed to crush anyone who questioned its foundation.

Her phone buzzed. David.

"You coming in?" his text read.

Mara's palm hovered over the screen. David, who'd shown her the hidden files. David, who'd warned her about the whistleblowing policy in her contract. David, with his careful distance and hotel room key cards.

The cable company would disconnect her service in an hour. She'd already canceled her lease. Everything she owned fit in her car—except the cat carrier and the lingering warmth of David's hand on her lower back three nights ago, when they'd both pretended the presentation review ran late.

Bast meowed, impatient with her paralysis.

"Yeah," Mara typed back. "Be there in twenty."

She gathered the cat, stepped over the abandoned cable, and opened her door to the heat of another Phoenix summer. The palm trees along her street swayed in the morning wind, indifferent to her treason. Somewhere in that corporate pyramid, someone was already drafting her replacement's contract. But for now, she had severance, a cat who needed breakfast, and a meeting with a man who might love her—or might just need another conspirator.

Mara started her engine. Either way, she was done climbing.
