The Corporate Pyramid

Elena smoothed her silk blouse, the fabric cool against her flushed skin. The spinach salad she'd eaten for lunch sat heavy in her stomach—poor man's sustenance while she watched men in Italian suits discuss mergers worth more than her entire childhood. She was the spy tonight, though not the glamorous kind. No martinis, no exotic locales. Just a corporate retreat center in Phoenix, stealing trade secrets from the company that had fired her father three months before his pension kicked in.

A monsoon storm had been brewing all afternoon, the sky bruising purple. Lightning cracked the window, startling her. In that flash, she saw herself reflected in the glass—a woman who'd traded her ethics for revenge, standing in a room full of people she'd spent her career trying to impress. The irony tasted bitter.

She slipped into the conference room while the executives were at the bar. The HDMI cable from the presentation laptop dangled invitingly. She had thirty seconds. Her fingers trembled as she connected her drive, watching the progress bar crawl across the screen. Somewhere in this digital pyramid of documents and spreadsheets lay evidence that would destroy the man who'd ruined her father.

'You're not supposed to be in here.'

Elena froze. A woman in the doorway—Catherine, the CEO's assistant. Younger than Elena, with the kind of face that had never known desperation.

'I was just—'

'Leaving,' Catherine said, stepping into the room. She closed the door softly behind her. 'Or finishing. Whatever you decide.'

The drive beeped. Done.

Catherine's expression didn't change. 'My father worked in the warehouse division. Twenty years. They laid him off two weeks before Christmas.' She extended a hand. 'Send me a copy when you get home.'

Elena slipped the drive into her pocket, heart pounding. Outside, the monsoon finally broke, rain hammering against the glass like applause.
