The Corporate Pyramid

The water in the rooftop pool reflected the Manila skyline, shimmering like broken glass. Elena floated on her back, deadline looming like a storm cloud. The vitamin supplements dissolved in her system, a futile attempt to armor herself against another week of corporate warfare.

Below, in the glass pyramid of the CEO's office, Richard was holding court. They called him the bull—a man who charged through meetings, goring dissent with sheer volume, leaving collateral damage in his wake. But it was the fox you had to watch for. Marcus, with his knowing smiles and carefully timed interruptions, had been positioning himself for Richard's job before the old man even announced his retirement.

Elena's phone buzzed against the poolside tile. Another Teams message. Marcus asking if she'd "align" with his vision for the department. The weasel words of a corporate coup in progress.

She thought about the pyramid scheme of their corporate structure—the few at the top extracting value from the many below, promising promotions that never materialized. She'd given this company ten years. Her best years.

The vitamin C had been her mother's idea. "Take care of yourself," she'd said, pressing the bottle into Elena's hand during her last visit. "Don't let them consume you."

What would remain of Elena when they finally extracted everything?

She pulled herself from the pool, water streaming off her like the last of her patience. In the locker room mirror, she saw the exhaustion etched around her eyes. But beneath it, something else stirred. The fox was cunning, yes. The bull was powerful. But they'd both underestimated the quiet ones who'd simply had enough.

Elena dried off slowly. Let Marcus make his moves. Let Richard keep charging. She'd document everything she'd seen—the false reports, the manipulated metrics, the pressure-cooker environment that had sent three of her colleagues to therapy.

Sometimes the bull's greatest strength was its inability to see the knife until it was already inside.

She dressed with deliberate care, vitamin supplements rattling in her bag like promises kept. Today, she would finally send that email to HR. Not as a victim, but as witness.

The pyramid was about to crumble, and Elena was ready to be the first to walk away from the rubble.
