The Corporate Pyramid
Emma stirred the spinach wilting in the pan, watching Marcus pace her small kitchen. They hadn't been real friends since the merger, not really, but tonight she'd needed someone to pour wine with while she explained why she'd walked out.
"It's the pyramid scheme of it all," Marcus said, finally sitting. "We're at the bottom supporting their bonuses, and they act surprised when we notice."
Emma plated their dinner. The spinach steamed between them. "Richard called me 'emotional' in the meeting today. Said I should leave my feelings at home like a good corporate soldier."
"That bull has been riding you since the audit." Marcus took a forkful. "Did you tell him what you really thought?"
"Every word that mattered." A small smile crossed her face. "Then I gathered my things and left. No notice, no package. Just me and my plant."
Outside, summer lightning flickered, illuminating the dark clouds gathering over the city. The storm was coming. Emma felt lighter than she had in years.
"I should have done it months ago," she admitted. "The promotions that never happened, the credit that always went elsewhere, the pretending that climbing their pyramid meant anything."
Marcus refilled their glasses. "So what's next?"
Emma watched the lightning fork across the sky, thinking of her uncle's farm, the garden she'd helped tend as a girl, the simple honesty of growing things from seed. "I have savings. I have time. And I remember how to grow actual food, not spreadsheets."
"Spinach included?"
"Spinach included."
They ate in comfortable silence as the first raindrops fell, the storm finally breaking against the windows. Somewhere out there, Richard was probably still in his corner office, oblivious to how thoroughly the lightning had already struck.
