The Corporate Pyramid

Maria stared at the organizational chart on her office wall—a perfect pyramid with the CEO at the apex and entry-level workers like her forming the broad base. Twenty years of climbing toward that golden peak, and she'd only made it to middle management, a position that felt more like suffocation than success.

Her desk drawer held three bottles of supplements: Vitamin D for the fluorescent-light deprivation, B-complex for the stress that had become her constant companion, and magnesium for the sleep that increasingly eluded her. Each morning, she swallowed them like communion wafers, a ritual of faith in a system that was slowly consuming her.

The building's lobby had always been sterile, all marble and chrome, until management installed the 'wellness initiative': a therapy dog program. Every Tuesday, a golden retriever named Barnaby patrolled the ground floor, his tail wagging with an enthusiasm that made Maria's chest ache.

She'd started taking the stairs just to pass him, and somehow—embarrassingly, she'd admit only to herself—those brief moments became the highlight of her week. Barnaby didn't care about her title, her performance reviews, or the imposter syndrome that woke her at 3 AM. He just leaned against her leg, his warm weight anchoring her to something real.

"You alright, Maria?" asked the dog's handler, an elderly volunteer who'd seen too many people like her.

She almost lied. Almost said 'fine' and continued her ascent toward another day of spreadsheets and strategic planning. Instead, she knelt and buried her face in Barnaby's fur, breathing in the smell of something that had never asked her to be anything but present.

"No," she whispered. "I really don't think I am."

That night, she threw her vitamins in the trash. The pyramid could wait. She had a life to live.
