The Corporate Afterlife

Elena pressed her palm against the cold glass of the thirty-seventh floor, watching the city lights blur beneath her. Three years since David disappeared, and she was still trapped in the pyramid scheme they'd built together—a multilevel marketing machine that sold nothing but the illusion of success to younger, hungrier versions of themselves.

The door clicked behind her. She didn't turn.

"I know you've been reading my emails," she said. "The spyware I installed on your laptop works both ways, David."

He stepped into her peripheral vision, thinner now, hollowed out in a way that made something in her chest tighten. "I'm not back for the business, El. I'm back because the FTC investigation isn't just looking at the company. They're looking at us."

Elena finally faced him. He looked like a zombie of the man she'd loved—same sharp jawline, same calculated charm, but something vital had been extracted. Maybe it was his soul. Maybe it was just the ability to sleep at night.

"So you want to turn state's witness," she said. "After everything."

"After you emptied our joint accounts the week before you vanished," she corrected. "I'm not the villain here, David. I'm just the one who learned to play the game."

He reached for her hand, his palm dry and paper-thin. "There's still a way out. For both of us. But we have to decide tonight."

Outside, the rain began to fall, and Elena watched droplets race down the glass like tiny, desperate prisoners. She'd spent thirty-five years climbing pyramids built by men like David, reaching toward peaks that dissolved under scrutiny. Maybe it was time to let one collapse on her own terms.

"Make the call," she said, and for the first time in three years, she felt something like hope—or maybe it was just the thrill of finally burning it all down.
