The Corporate Afterlife

The office was silent at 11 PM, the only sound the hum of fluorescent lights and Elena's own heartbeat. She'd been climbing this corporate pyramid for seven years, each step taking something essential from her—first her weekends, then her relationships, then the spark that used to make her laugh at terrible jokes. Now she stood outside Marcus's corner office, knowing what she had to do.

Three months ago, she'd discovered she wasn't the only one watching. The IT logs showed it clearly: someone had been accessing her private emails, her calendar, even her personal cloud storage. A spy in the house of ambition. Marcus had hired her as his protégé, called her a "clever little fox" when she'd uncovered the competitor's pricing strategy. But clever foxes sometimes get hunted.

She remembered who she used to be—the woman who danced in the rain, who believed in loyalty, who thought success meant something more than a corner office and a heart attack at forty. That Elena felt like a stranger now, like someone she'd seen in a photograph once. The real Elena had become something else entirely: a workplace zombie moving through the motions, eating whatever scraps of meaning fell from the table above, barely alive but impossible to kill.

Marcus's door was unlocked. He'd left early today, confident in his victory. Tomorrow the board would vote on the merger, and Marcus would walk away with millions while the department Elena built was gutted for "synergies."

Her hand hovered over the mouse. The evidence was on her screen—emails proving Marcus had manipulated the merger numbers, sabotaged projects, lied to shareholders. One click to send to the board, one email to destroy the man who'd made her career and hollowed her soul.

Instead, she deleted everything.

The pyramid would remain. A new fox would take her place, and new spies would watch from the shadows. As she walked out into the night air for the first time in years, Elena finally understood: the only way to stop being a zombie was to stop letting them eat you alive.
